RESET / RESHAPE

Every life lost is tragic. Within the healing process in the aftermath of COVID-19 lies a need to reflect on the monumental consequences of the sheer number of global deaths. This urn is a personification of these passings.

The urn is a ceramic vessel made in the low-fire process of raku. This specific raku process is a Western adaptation from a traditional Japanese firing technique. Raku firing uses techniques of carbon trapping elements of fire, smoke, and ash, with parallels to a cremation ceremony, and a transformation of the elements into dust. This performative aspect of firing is a way to remember and communally grieve the losses from the pandemic.

This Augmented Reality overlay— black mist expelling from the repeating sculpture— symbolizes the immense loss faced during this time, memorializing all who have passed.
