Transcendients: 100 Days of COVID-19
DAY 78: HANAUMA BAY (Part I & II)
East Oahu, HI
On March 16, Mayor Kirk Caldwell ordered
the shutdown of Hanauma Bay because of the threat
of COVID-19. The bay is one of the most beautiful and popular snorkeling destinations on the island, attracting up to 3,000 tourists a day. It also has long been abused by sheer numbers of tourists. This shutdown has given nature a rest from human disturbance. Researchers are seizing the opportunity to study nature’s restorative force here and elsewhere. There are reports of improved marine life and coral growth in parts of the Islands where the public patronage has been restricted.
